Being involved in a road traffic collision can be a very upsetting experience with very serious outcomes. Here are some helpful tips about what to do if you are involved in one.
Top 7 Tips to follow if you are in a car accident
Stop Your Vehicle
Even if the accident was minor, you must stop. Activate your hazard lights for other drivers on the road so they can pass with cation and assess your situation depending on where you have stopped so another accident does not occur.
Stay at the Scene
It is your legal obligation to remain at the scene for a reasonable time. Failure to do so is commonly described as a “hit and run” and carries a criminal offence. If there is another vehicle involved in the accident and they drive off be sure to get their vehicle registration so you can share this information with the Police.
Check for Any Injuries and Seek Medical Attention
Now you must assess the accident. If anyone is injured call 999 (or 101 if non-emergency). The Police should be called if you suspect any criminal offence has been committed or the accident is obstructing a road.
Collect Details and Take Photographs
You are obliged to give your name and address to anyone involved in the accident. You should also collect the same information from the other parties. Do not admit liability at the scene. If safe to do so and you own a camera phone, take as many photographs and videos of the scene as you can, including your vehicle and any other vehicles involved.
Remain Calm
Involvement in a road accident is a truly awful thing. Try your best to remain calm and focus on your physical and mental recovery. Keeping calm in this situation will also help when it comes to providing evidence with the Police about the location of the accident and any other information you will need to share.
Be aware of delayed shock.
In even the most minor of collisions, shock can affect you hours later. It may be beneficial to be in the company of family or friends after a collision to ensure your wellbeing. If there is any doubt, or you begin to feel unwell please seek medical advice as soon as possible. Make sure that you record any medical advice you have received as you may need this later if you are making a compensation claim.
Seek Advice
Contact your solicitor as soon as possible, even before you tell your insurance provider. Your solicitors should be able to take care of injury claims if required. Now that your solicitor is involved it is their job to guide you through the complexities of being involved in a Road Traffic Accident.
